Amendments and the Fight for Women’s Rights

Jacobin interviewed several members and organizations that are part of Somos Muchas to discuss the recent constitutional amendments. The articles that underwent amendments were related to abortion and equal marriage in Honduras, which were already illegal beforehand.

In addition to discussing the hasty decision by Congress, the article also contextualizes the current situation in Honduras under Juan Orlando Hernández. Most notably, his outreach to the U.S. right-wing and to the various fundamentalist groups in Honduras that oppose women’s and LGBT rights.

However, Somos Muchas and many other organizations in the country continue to fight for the recognition of the rights of women and LGBT people. As mentioned in the article:

While the state continues to entrench sanctimonious religious values, women and trans people continue to face violence and death with little protection. The 2009 coup d’état, multiple electoral fraudulent elections, and so many murders have taught women and trans people that their only choice is to continue to fight for justice, and to be as creative as possible.
